In 1939, the Society expanded its services and treatments to accommodate children requiring extended stays and pre and post-operative cases. During the Polio epidemic in Puerto Rico in the forties, additional human resources and medical equipment were added to attend to post-acute cases of polio and other conditions. It wasn’t until 1964 that it changed its name to Sociedad Pro Hospital del Niño (Hospital del Niño) as we know it today.

The Sociedad Pro Hospital del Niño is a non-profit institution incorporated in the Department of State in 1925.  We are the only Pediatric Skill Nursing Home (Casa de Salud) on the Island providing extended stay and convalescence services to economically disadvantaged patients aged 0-21, referred and under the custody of the Department of the Family. Presently, we can serve a population of 37 children suffering from chronic or severe conditions, whether physical or mental.

In addition to the Casa de Salud, we have two other significant programs to serve children and our community: we provide outpatient therapy services to over 3,000 children across the island under licenses from the Department of Health and the Department of Education.  We also operate an intensive therapeutic-educational center called the Centro de Aprendizaje del Niño (CAN), specializing in developing academic, social, behavioral, and communication skills that currently serves its maximum capacity of 54 children.
